Food & Supplies for Severe Weather Along the Texas Gulf Coast

As we approach early August and the month of September,  Texas residents along the Gulf Coast should be prepared to protect your home and family in case of a hurricane or other major storm system that visits the area.  Although there are no tropical threats in the Gulf for the next 5 days according to meteorologist Travis Herzog with KTRK in Houston,  Travis says that historically 90% of all hurricane activity occurs after August 10th.  It's best to be prepared and this checklist will ensure that you have the necessary supplies on hand at home should the need arise.

  • Water

1 gallon per person per day.  For a family of 4 for 5 days, you will need 20 gallons.  Fill your bathtub with water for basic sanitation and dish washing.  Do not drink this water.

  • First Aid Kit

Band-Aids, bandages, pain relievers,  eye wash, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives, antibiotic ointment, Peroxide, alcohol, bleach and a medicine dropper so you can create water disinfectant (6 drops of bleach                         for every 1 gallon of water), hand sanitizer, any medications, hygiene products, and baby products.

  • Portable battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both

  • Cell phone and charger.  Remember to have ONE fully charged cellular phone.

  • Flashight and extra batteries

1 flashlight per family member as well as extra batteries for each flashlight.  Be sure you know the correct size of extra batteries.

  • Toolkit

A basic set of tools: hammer, nails, screws, screwdriver, pliers, and a knife.

  • Sanitation Products

Toilet paper, moist towelettes, and plastic garage bags in different sizes.  You need to keep waste away from your family and your other supplies until local services like water and trash are restored.

Your family needs to accumulate at lease a 5-day supply of non-perishable food that requires no refrigeration and very little preparation.  This would include:

  • Dry cereal

  • Canned fruits

  • Canned vegetables

  • Canned juice

  • Canned nuts

  • Ready to eat can soup and meats

  • Peanut Butter

  • Crackers

  • Bread

  • Quick energy snacks, granola bars, dried fruit, etc.

  • Pet food

  • Baby formula

Other items

  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically, or in a waterproof, portable container.

  • Rain gear

  • Paper Towels

  • Plastic Sheeting

  • Rope

  • Duct Tape

  • Fire extinguisher

  • Aluminum foil

  • Mosquito repellent

  • Grill

  • Charcoal

  • Lighter

  • Lighter fluid

  • Cash

  • Dust mask

  • Whistle to signal for help

  • Manual can opener

  • Large sealable bags to store important documents and papers

  • Strikeable anywhere matches

  • Resealable plastic bags

  • Local map

  • Pet leash and pet crate

Since you do not know where you will be when an emergency occurs, prepare supplies for home, work and vehicles.  After assembling your kit remember to maintain it, so it's ready when needed.  Remember to re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family's needs change.

If you do lose power, follow this three step procedure:

  1.  Eat Perishable items in your refrigerator & pantry.

  2. Eat Perishable items in your freezer.  As long as food  contains ice crystals in the center,  that means it is still safe to eat.

  3. Eat your stock of non-perishable items.
